Handling Fire Extinguishing Foam Compounds Foam fire extinguishing compounds are highly expandable (foaming) products. Depending on the type of foam compound, the foam varies in its stability, i.e. once foam has formed it may decompose very slowly, which impedes the filling up of containers of all types and
could impair the quality, particularly in the case of protein foam compounds.
Particular attention must be paid to the following points: Transport and storage containers, including pumps, fittings, pipelines and hoses must be absolutely clean and free from other products. They should be carefully rinsed with clear water or, if necessary, steamed out!
Before filling a container with foam, check that:
| the container is equipped with a base fitting for filling (filling from below). | | a filling pipe reaches down to the bottom of the container if a filling facility is used from above (sub-surface filling) | | the foam
compound is the same as that stored in the storage container when refilling it. |
When filling a container, make sure the foam compound is only pumped at low pressure or if transported by road tanker, then only at a slight overpressure. In order to prevent foaming, the foam compound should never be pumped at high pressure. Compressed air used to empty the road tanker must never be allowed to get into the transfer tank being filled!
